As a young teen, like many my age, I loved the television show EMERGENCY and thought that looks like a fun thing to do. At 18 I walked into the New Milford Fire Protection District and decided to join. At that time, I had no idea I had found my life’s calling. Shortly after joining I became an EMT and was put in charge of my own crew. Through the circle of life, I moved to different locations, but each time sought out the local fire department, returning to New Milford in 2005. Taking many fire related classes and going to Rock Valley College as I could afford it, I have earned many certificates and am currently finishing my Associates in Fire Science.

I have recently earned my Fire Officer 1 and will be finishing my Fire Officer 2 spring of 2017. In July of 2015 our previous Chief retired and I went through the application process and was named Chief of New Milford Fire Protection District. I have since turned a low morale and stale department into a dynamic group of individuals that crave education and getting certified in anything they can. We are now viewed as an up and coming young department that area Chiefs are talking about (in a good way).

I have been with the New Milford Fire Protection District since October 27, 2008.  On October 24, 2008, I spoke with Captain Joe Haynes (Retired) about what it took to be a volunteer firefighter. After a long conversation, Captain Haynes “challenged” me to show up to a training and see what it was all about. On Monday, October 27th, 2008, I completed my application at New Milford Fire Protection District. Had it not been for my conversation with Captain Haynes I would probably never gotten involved in the Fire Service. I was the First Full Time Paid employee in the District’s History and Now, I am the Deputy Chief of Operations and EMS. Over the years I have obtained my Advanced Technician Firefighter, Fire Officer I, Instructor II, NIMS 100,200,700 and 800 and ICS 300 and 400. I am currently working on completion of my Fire Officer II. In this profession learning never stops.

Hello I’m Dylan. I was born and have grown up in the Rockford Area. I have been with the New Milford Fire Protection District since 2015. I been in the fire service since 2011. I have been an EMT (Through Mercy Rockford) since 2012. I worked for a private ambulance company in Rockford called ATS and for Durand Fire Department, just as an EMT, from 2012-2016. My father is the person who recommend the fire service to me while I was still in high school. Right after high school I began to take my first fire science classes at Rock valley and began running with the Northwest Fire Protection District. Since then I have become enthralled with Emergency Medical Services and Firefighting. “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”.

Born in Rockford Illinois on july 3rd 1995, Christian Castro is a first generation Mexican American and one of our newest members to the New Milford Fire Protection District. Raised and current resident of Belvidere Illinois; at the age of 5, Christian was able to attend a field trip to one of the fire stations in his area. At that moment, Christian knew he wanted to become a firefighter. Over the next few years, Christian never lost sight of his goal. He trained hard every day, always trying to improve himself, for the day he becomes a firefighter. at the age of 15 Christian met Captain Al Hyser (now Chief Hyser) of the Belvidere fire department and was able to get guidance from him. After being told to check out rock valley college and their firefighting program, Christian made it his goal to get the education he needed to become a firefighter. Even going as far as taking college classes while in high school through the running start program. Currently, Christian is still enrolled in Rock Valley College and has his EMT-B certification and is working towards his associates of fire science. We are glad to have such a valuable asset to our department and we are also excited to see what the future has in-store of us and Mr. Castro.
